Ch.3, Sec.3 – Founding the Middle & Southern Colonies - to attract more settlers, the Dutch West India Company employed the patroon system, which allowed a person to bring 50 settlers to New Netherland in exchange for a land grant New Netherland Becomes New York New Netherland Becomes New York - By A.D. 1664, King Charles II decided that his brother, the Duke of York, should drive the Dutch out of New Netherland - England viewed the Dutch as a threat because of their trading, colonies, and location - New Netherland became a proprietary colony of England, meaning they are owned by the English
