SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR POWER TOOLS INDEPENDENCE MIDDLE SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION DR. HURD 2010

BANDSAW GENERAL SAFETY RULES 1.Obtain instruction on the safe operation of the band saw before using the machine. 2.Always use the guards whenever possible. Check to see that they are in place and properly adjusted and secured. 3.Use the proper blade size and width for the job. 4.Adjust the upper blade guard so it is about 1/8” above the work surface. 5.Properly adjust the blade tension, tracking, blade guides and blade support bearings. 6.Keep arms, hands and fingers away from the blade at all times. 7.Avoid awkward operations and hand positions where a sudden slip could cause a hand to move into the blade.

BAND SAW SAFETY RULES 8.Never start the machine before clearing the table of all objects, tools and scrap pieces. 9.Never start the machine without instructor permission. 10.Never start the machine with the work piece against the blade. 11.Hold work piece firmly against the table. DO NOT attempt to saw a work piece that does not have a flat surface against the table. 12.Hold work piece firmly and feed at a moderate rate. 13.Never reach under the table while the machine is running. 14.Turn the machine off to back out of an uncompleted or jammed cut. 15.Make relief cuts prior to cutting long curves.

BAND SAW SAFETY RULES 16. Turn the machine off and wait for the blade to stop prior to cleaning the blade area, removing debris near the blade, removing or securing the work or changing the angle of the table. A coasting blade can be dangerous. 17.Never reach behind the blade for any reason. 18.Always use a push stick when cutting close to the blade to avoid contacting the blade. 19.Never perform layout, assembly or set up work on the table when the machine is running. 20.Turn off the machine before installing or removing accessories or when making repairs. 21.Always wait for the machine to come to a complete stop before leaving the area. 22.Always use a V-block to cut cylindrical stock.
