Metaphor Definition: Comparing two unfamiliar objects without using “like” or “as” OR Something used to represent or symbolize something else

Metaphors continued Example #1: Her love was a rose that brought both beauty and pain in his life.

Metaphors continued Example #2: "A man may break a word with you, sir, and words are but wind." (William Shakespeare, The Comedy of Errors) Here, Shakespeare compares words being as light as wind, which symbolizes how men cannot be trusted by their words alone

Metaphor continued Example #3: "The rain came down in long knitting needles." Here, the rain is being symbolized/compared to knitting needles.

Imagery Definition: Vivid, descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste). It creates an “image” in your mind b/c the words are so descriptive. **Sometimes “imagery” is also used to refer to “figurative language”, especially similes and metaphors.

Imagery continued Example: “Have you ever thought about what protects our heart Just a cage of rib bones and other various parts So it's fairly simple to cut right through the mess And to stop the muscle that makes us confess And we are so fragile And our cracking bones make noise And we are just Breakable, breakable, breakable girls and boys” - “Breakable” by Ingrid Michaelson

Repetition Definition: Repeating a word, phrase, or sentence for emphasis. Example: "And the man sat upon the rock, and leaned his head upon his hand, and looked out upon the desolation.... And I lay close within shelter of the lilies, and observed the actions of the man. And the man trembled in the solitude;--but the night waned, and he sat upon the rock." (Edgar Allan Poe, "Silence") "And the man sat upon the rock, and leaned his head upon his hand, and looked out upon the desolation.... And I lay close within shelter of the lilies, and observed the actions of the man. And the man trembled in the solitude;--but the night waned, and he sat upon the rock." (Edgar Allan Poe, "Silence")
