Reminder… This class is focusing on the three most important issues of the 2016 Presidential Election! 1.Black Lives Matter 2.Women’s Rights 3.Gun Control We will be discussing the history behind the movement and the movement itself for the next two classes, then focusing on how the candidates are approaching the issue

History  Emancipation Proclamation (1862)- An order by Abraham Lincoln to make 3 million slaves in America “free”  14 th Amendment (1868)- said all people were equal under the law  “separate but equal” (1896)- blacks and whites COULD be separate if they both got equal treatment (Plessy v. Jim Crow Law ( )  Voting: violence, literacy tests, poll taxes, had to own property, grandfather clause (grandfather had to have voted before 1867)  Government: could not be in local government or on a jury if you could not vote  School: black and white children could not go to school together; schools for black students were old and falling apart, did not get as much money from the government, did not have many books, and teachers were paid much less  Housing: In many states, black people could not rent a flat if white people lived in the building  Jobs: busboys, elevator operators, garbage men, porters, maids, and cooks were considered “negro jobs;” it was almost impossible for black people to get “city jobs”  Justice: a lack of black people in juries; worse punishments for black people

Example  Scottsboro case- in 1931, 9 black boys were taken off of a train in Scottsboro, Alabama, taken to jail, and declared guilty of raping two white girls  When homeless white boys starting fighting the Scottsboro Boys, two white girls on the train told police that they had been raped so they and the other white boys would not be arrested for “vagrancy” (being homeless)  Even though the Scottsboro Boys’ lawyer had good evidence that they never raped the girls AND the girls admitted they lied, an all white jury sentenced the boys (ages 12 through 19 ) to DEATH.  After many more trials and eight years, the boys were finally considered innocent. Each served at least 6 years in prison.
