Course Objectives By the end of the course, students will be able to: understand power dimensions underlying language use within specific socio-cultural contexts, critically evaluate a variety of texts, particularly in the mass media, and communicate effectively for their own needs and purposes.

Perspectives of ‘language’, ‘power’, and ‘ideology’ based on an understanding of discourse as socio-cultural practice a critical approach to language study Areas of focus are belief systems, points of view, the cultural baggage that speakers bring to their dealings with language, cultural ideas about the value of literacy and valued texts, intertextuality, discourses of power, and speaker/reader positioning. Sample texts will be investigated to discern ideological dimensions, power relations, and related ‘points of view’ To help students develop a critical awareness for language and hence empowerment through discourse.
