Grade 4 Rockies & Grade 4 Amazon

Introduction The teachers in Grade 4 are: Ms Paula (Grade 4 Rockies) – Team Leader Ms Mahe (Grade 4 Amazon) Ms Marissa (Music), Mr Babu (PE), Ms Anna (ICT), Ms Lina (Islamic Studies), Ms Asma (Arabic Language), Ms Rania (Arabic for non-Arabic speakers), Ms Samar (Arabic Social Studies)

Attendance & Punctuality Registration am. Assembly – 7.50 am. In the morning, children will come to class, be registered and will go to assembly with their class teacher. Attendance and lateness are monitored on a monthly basis and a report given to the Principal. It is very important that children are on time as important information is often given out at the start of the day and homework diaries are completed.

Healthy Snack Break and Lunch We have introduced a healthy snack break. This will take place at 9.05 – 9.15am. As this is a short break, appropriate healthy snacks to send to school are pieces of fruit or a selection of raw vegetables (carrots, cucumber etc). After break time, it will be lunch time. Children have 20 minutes to eat lunch, and again the lunch provided should be healthy and the drink should be water or a carton of juice. Please do NOT send chocolate, crisps, candy, fries, burgers or nuggets. Fizzy drinks are NOT allowed. It is very important to keep hydrated. Children should bring a water bottle that they can use in the classroom and also to take outside for break time and PE.

Core curriculum Reading – guided reading, individual reading to the teacher, silent reading (children should bring a book of their choice) and reading comprehension. A reading passport scheme will be started shortly and a full reading record is kept. Writing – a range of types of writing are taught including narrative, descriptive and expository and journal writing. Big Write takes place fortnightly. Spellings and grammar. Mathematics – Abacus programme Science – Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Arabic, Islamic Studies, Arabic Social Studies

Additional Curriculum Subjects Social Studies – Map skills, deserts of the world, UAE and its immediate neighbours, Canada and the Native Americans, Ancient Greece, Bangladesh (a developing country). PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) Art ICT P.E Music

Communication Communication from the school is by a variety of methods: School telephone SMS School website (including the parent information handbook to be uploaded) It is very important that we have up to date contact details including parents’ mobiles. Due to teaching commitments, teachers are unable to meet with parents during school hours. Formal appointments can be made to speak to a teacher after school. Teachers are available to speak to parents informally at the end of the school day during pick up time.

Homework Planners Children have now received their homework planners. They will write their homework in their planner at the start of each day. Homework will consist of one subject activity plus 15 minutes of reading. Parents should check that their child has completed their homework and 15 minutes reading (ideally listen to them) and then sign the diary. Homework MUST be handed in the following day – a record is kept.

Assessment Continual assessment of children is built into planning and takes place throughout the year. There are end of unit tests for science, social studies and mathematics. Termly reporting of students’ effort and attainment is given in the end of term repor t.

Coming to School Children should wear the correct uniform/P.E. kit including correct footwear. They should bring their lunch box, healthy snack, water bottle plus a small bag for school essentials. Please do not send large bags or trolley bags. A book list and stationery list has been provided – please ensure your child has everything they need. All books should be covered in clear plastic. A pencil case should be provided to hold the stationery items.

Trips, Visits, Clubs and Events There will be a range of visits (3 per year)., trips, visitors to school and workshops running throughout the year Extra-curricular activities will take place throughout the year and will run straight after school finishes. A variety of fundraising events and special events will take place throughout the year. Details of events will be given nearer the time of the event.

Involving Parents Teachers often need additional help (preparing resources, school trips, assistance with listening to children read, special events). If you are interested in becoming a class helper please write your name and contact details on the sign up sheet. A new PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is to be established. The Principal will hold a coffee morning for all interested parents which will be held on 19 th September at 10.00am.

Question Time Please feel free to ask us any questions about the content of today’s presentation and take a look at some of the resources used in Grade 4. We are not able to talk about the children in Grade 4 at this time but there will be a parent – teacher evening in November. PLEASE NOTE: Please inform the school regarding any health issues of your child. Documentation has been sent home by the school.
