Being a Canvas Early Implementer Lolita Alfred Lecturer, Faculty of Health and Social Care

Preparation - Staff  Support from Andy and the TEL team  Trial and error  Accessing training- e.g. marking on CANVAS/Speedgrader  CANVAS online & telephone support  FHSC set up an Early Implementer Group to share learning and support staff through the change

Preparing the Students  2 modules in semester 2 - both on CANVAS  Communication prior to module start  Access to CANVAS weeks prior to module start  First session facilitated in a computer room  Managing anxieties about moving from one VLE to another

Some Useful Features on CANVAS…

Course Analytics – Overall Student Activity  Course Analytics

Course Analytics - Individual Student Participation: monitor & support/encourage active engagement with learning outside of class

Enhancing Teaching and Learning- Formative Assessment

Enhancing Teaching & Learning – Using Discussion Forums

The Students’ Experience So Far  Informal feedback suggests most seem to prefer CANVAS over E-bridge  More user friendly  Some features similar to those in social media- picture uploads, “like it” functions etc  Others require a bit more support  Support/exploration of challenges offered by myself as module leader and by students AST  Some initial queries around submission and how this will work

Next Steps…  Assignment submission  Marking/2 nd marking  Feedback  Share experiences/learning in Early Implementer Group meetings
