ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

Decisions about development Some people think all development must be a good thing. But all types of development have one feature in common, that is they involve change. Usually these changes are permanent and irreversible. This is why it is important to make sure that such decisions are the right ones.

Development is for people,but so is the environment. In many cases developments are planned and carried out without adequate knowledge of the existing environmental conditions or of the possible damage to the environment,which might be caused by the development.

DEVELOPMENT COMPASS DEVELO PMENT NESW

N = NATURAL RESOURCES E = ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT W= WHO DECIDES? S = SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Can the natural environment be used in such a way that we don’t damage or destroy it? What sort of economic development should take place and what effect will it have on the environment?

Is this amount of social development enough? Who matters most when decisions are being made, what are the aims of the people making decisions?

MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Initiated by U.N in 2000 The target date for achieving these goals was 2015

Examples ASWAN DAM Flood waters no longer reach the delta Snails carrying larvae Of bilharzia worm not washed away.

Destruction of mangroves At one time Pakistan had one of the five largest mangrove forests in the world! Nurseries of fish, e.g oysters, crabs, shrimps. Barriers against Cyclones. Stop intrusion of the sea Which destroys farmland

Indonesian forest fires

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Development which helps to improve the quality of people’s lives and which, at the same time, does not damage or destroy the environment that supports those people’s lives

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

QUALITY OF LIFE This is to do with a person’s general well being and enjoyment of life. You can be poor and still be happy. It is not about money but the personal relationships, health, stress and enjoyment of life. It is about emotional, social and physical well being. In some countries/cultures this can be about freedom from slavery, torture, political freedom, religious freedom, discrimination, the right to vote, women’s rights.

STANDARD OF LIVING This is to do with income and wealth. Its about how many possessions you have, the luxuries you can afford. Whether you are rich or poor. Some of the words associated with standard of living are income, employment, GDP, class, education.
