How I got here today

My journey Dodge City, Kansas Family of origin College/Chicago Kansas City Family Career Civic Engagement  Just a small town girl…  Can I live up to expectations?  Life in the closet: Not recommended.  Building a new, grownup life  Parenting = self-doubt in whole new ways  Can I really do this?  Everyone here is smarter than I am!

My journey… continues! My approach today:  Manage self-doubt  Evolve with it  Authenticity  Vulnerability  Learning  Trust (earned and given)

Self-Doubt: Everyone has it, sometimes.

Self-Doubt: Sometimes your enemy…

Self-Doubt: Sometimes your friend!

Self-Doubt and Confidence in America

Recognize when self-doubt is helping or hurting you Thoughtful reflection Self-awareness Appropriate risk-taking Identify learning needs Expectations of perfection Fear-based approach Unrealistic comparisons Lost motivation

Gender can play a role (sometimes)

Age can play a role (sometimes) Traditionalists: Born before 1946 Baby Boomers: 1946 – 1964 Generation X: 1965 – 1980 Millennials: 1981 – 2000

So we all have self-doubt, sometimes. Now what?  Get real (embrace your strength and weakness)  Practice (like an orchestra conductor)  Say it; Do it (get in the mix!)  Take risks (do the thing you’re afraid of)  Find a mentor… And be a mentor

Who knows what this word means? PHOTOTROPISM = Self-talk = “The Secret” = The power of mantras = Self-fulfilling prophecy

Self-talk: Not this simple, but it matters.

Self-Doubt and Implications for Leadership Remember: Some self-doubt can be helpful! Situation-based Developmentally appropriate Manage risk Stay open to learning!

Self-Doubt and Implications for Leadership My personal “Executive Committee”: Mark AndersonKay Julian Holly BuckendahlBrent Stewart Get help, give help!

Self-Doubt and Implications for Leadership The only 2 emotions are… Emerging visions of leadership Brene Brown and Vulnerability Harvard Business Review: “Connect, then Lead” Amy J.C. Cuddy, Matthew Kohut, John Neffinger People judge you on these 2 qualities…

Self-Doubt and Implications for Leadership Your goal is not perfection! Self-awareness Wisdom Maturity Grace Self-assurance It’s a journey… Choose optimism!

Self-Doubt and Implications for Leadership Forbes Leadership Forum: “Seven Steps to Conquering Self Doubt” 1.Recognize that it is not unique to you 2.Question your doubt 3.Seek out advice, support, and mentorship from others 4.Relax and distract yourself 5.Engage in self-talk and imagery 6.Set specific goals 7.Face your fears

A final thought… “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all." J.K. Rowling

Discussion: What do YOU think? 1. Have you ever felt self-doubt? 2. Have you ever felt self-doubt in a leadership position? 3. Have you felt this within the last 6 months? Share:  What today “rang true” for you?  What are your suggestions for your colleagues?  What will you do now?

Thank you! Tami Greenberg Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City (816)
