English 10 Vocabulary

How we do vocabulary 10 words per week. Words given out on Monday 3-Column notes due Friday. Word – part of speech – definition – original, contextual sentence. Quiz over two sets of words every 2 weeks 10 spelling words & 20 MC questions

Vocabulary #1 Our Evolving Language

VCR, YOLO, Scuba, NASA, AWOL. Acronym (n): A word formed from the first letter of each word in a series. Can you think of any acronyms? VCR, YOLO, Scuba, NASA, AWOL. *RIP, LOL, LMAO are only acronyms if you pronounce them as a word

Affix (n): A prefix or suffix. (v): A to attach something (esp Affix (n): A prefix or suffix. (v): A to attach something (esp. to a word) What are some common affixes? Prefixes: Pre- anti- inter- under- mis- dis- Suffixes: -able –er –ment –ing –est –less

Bromance, frenemy, google (as a verb), earworm, glamping Coinage (n): The invention of a new word or phrase.. Coin (v): To create a new word. What are some recently coined words? Why do you think we coin new words? Bromance, frenemy, google (as a verb), earworm, glamping

Colloquial (adj): Informal language, conversational What are some school appropriate colloquialisms you use every day?

Diminutive (n): A suffix that indicates small size, affection, youth, or familiarity (adj): Extremely small or tiny. What words might you use to speak affectionately about a: Dog Horse Rubber duck What might you call a small version of a Drop Book Pig What might you call a close friend named: Charles Thomas Kenneth

Metonymy (n): When something isn’t called by its own name, but instead, by something closely related to it. Lend me your ears: What does this sentence mean? What does “ears” mean here? Can I have a ride?: Does the word “ride” stand for something else? What are the metonymies in these sentences and what do they stand for? The pen is mightier than the sword. Give me a hand. Macaroni and cheese is my favorite dish. The United States is trying to reform its immigration policies.

Oxymoron (n): A contradictory expression What are some common oxymorons? Jumbo shrimp, pretty ugly, awfully good, True Lies (movie)

Palindrome (n): A word or expression spelled the same forward and backward. Can you think of any palindromes? Bob, level, radar Was it a cat I saw? Don’t nod.

Portmanteau (n): A word formed by combining parts of two words. Can you think of any portmanteau words? Smog, brunch, frenemy, glamping, bromance, Ginormous, skort, spork, Brangelina, Billary

Spoonerism (n): An often comical switching of the first sounds of two or more words What happens when you mix up the initial sounds in these phrases? Tease my ears Ease my tears. A lack of pies A pack of lies Wave the sails Save the whales
