 In group’s own language and/or special vocabulary, “in words” that distinguish one group from another,  and also provides “secret” messages that those outside of the group/culture cannot understand. Gross example is Portuguese vs Spanish. 5

 Does a particular culture have an exclusive or almost exclusive means of mass communication?  For example: MTV or particular radio station, magazine 6

 For example: clothes, hair styles, body art, etc. 7

 How does one become successful or important or listened to?  What are the status symbols? 8

 What does the subculture provide that main culture does not give?  For example: youth oriented magazines, web sites, older adult magazines,  Exciting things to see and do that are typically sub culturally limited – only one main subculture participates 9

 Availability of mechanical technology – cars, trucks, buses, trains, trams, motor bikes, jeepney,  Availability of electronic digital devices – mobile phones, chat rooms, messaging, etc. 10

 Note: age groups are a bit flexible, but the following will suffice…  “Older adults” –born before 1945  Baby Boomers –  Generation X  Generation Y (Millennials) –  Youth – 2001-present 11
