Raiders of the Lost Ark Heather White Period 6

Dialogue Hooks One When the dialogue says “They’re loading it into the truck!” “What truck?”, the screen the transitions to a truck and you know that it’s the truck they were just talking about.

Dialogue Hook Two When Indiana Jones says, “Get me a plane! Get me a boat! Get me something!” the screen then transitions to Indiana on a boat.

Dialogue Hook Three The themes to the characters and objects are also dialogue hooks. When you hear a certain theme that you only hear when Indiana is around, you know you’re about to see Indiana again. Marion and the Ark also had their own unique themes that when you heard that musical theme, you knew you were going to be seeing either Marion, the Ark, or hearing something about the Ark.

Dangling Cause One When the German man’s hand gets burned by the medallion in the beginning of the movie, it leads to the Nazis having one side of the medallion because it is now burned into the German guy’s hand.

Dangling Cause Two Indiana Jones really hates snakes. So when Indiana and Marion get in the chamber with the Ark, there are tons of snakes everywhere.

Dangling Cause Three Indiana was worried that the Ark may not be for human eyes. When the Nazis get to the Ark and open it, bad things start to happen. The ones who had seen it were gone, but Indiana and Marion were still there because Indiana knew it was not safe for human eyes so he told Marion to close her eyes and not look at it. He did the same thing.

Motif One The color red is a motif in this movie. For the most part, the background and clothes are rather dull with lots of browns, tans, etc. So, when the color red pops up, your eyes are drawn to it and you notice the red thing as opposed to anything else going on for that brief moment.

Motif Two Indiana Jones’s theme music is another motif. Every time Indiana is on screen, his little musical theme is playing in the background, whether it’s slowed down, or sped up to fit the mood of the scene.

Motif Three The theme music for the Ark is a good motif. Whenever a character was talking about the Ark or the Ark showed up on screen, there was a unique musical theme going on in the background that was for the Ark.
