Goals of Whole Class Plan To create a positive learning environment in the classroom. To encourage on task behavior and thereby maximize instructional time and student work time. To establish a proactive vs. reactive response to managing off task and disruptive behavior.

Elements of Whole Class Plan   A. Whole Class Incentive Program: Structured program to encourage and increase target behaviours (positive behaviours to increase in frequency). B. Whole Class Consequence Flow Procedure: Concrete, pre-determined procedure that is followed when defined inappropariate behaviours are demonstrated. C. Proactive Strategies: Strategies that support successful implementation of the plan, increase the likelihood of positive behaviours, and decrease the likelihood of challenging behaviours.

In a class-wide plan: Expectations, Rewards, and Consequences are Pre-planned Predictable and explicit

Benefits Increases compliance (children) and consistency of delivery (Staff) Helps ensure consequences (positive and negative) are contingent on behavior Helps students make connections between behavior and consequences (positive and negative)

Benefits Reduces the time needed to respond to misbehavior Reduces (negative) verbal interactions and minimizes stress (for students and staff) – reduces verbal reprimands / negotiation / debate Makes use of Visuals / nonverbals: clear, ever-present; helps students know what to expect allows nonverbal cueing

Classroom Management Plan Group incentives (determined with the children) Select positive behaviors to increase Post visual expectations Use “Give Me 5” or other strategy to get and maintain attention Thermometer / pompom jar to measure and display ‘points’ earned Explicit reinforcement of target behaviors Frequent use of praise / positive feedback

Classroom Management Plan Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior Select targeted behaviors to reduce Noncompliance Persistent disruption Out of seat/wandering Visual reminders of pre-determined consequences are posted Fresh start once consequence is completed

Classroom Management Proactive Strategies for Individuals Proximity Praise peers who are following expectations Use nonverbal symbols (shh, raise hand etc.) Provide reminder of expectation and reward Ignore minor, brief, or non-disruptive behavior Give directives in the form of do’s vs. don’ts If not effective-use pre-determined consequences

Classroom Management Note: Not intended as an intervention strategy for significant/serious behaviors E.g. Physical aggression, other serious inappropriate behavior (e.g. threats) may need more immediate response from administration.
