Introduction New Brunswick Objective: To ensure the smooth flow of people, goods and services across our borders while meeting security enforcement requirements.

Border Crossings – Regional Importance New Brunswick is the gateway for trade in the Atlantic Provinces: Highway infrastructure leading to borders is critical. $7 billion of Atlantic Region exports travel to the US on New Brunswick roads. $3 billion is imported from the US to the Region. NB is the #1 export dependent province in Canada.

Challenges Growing NB’s trade and investment Border infrastructure and programs (FAST, NEXUS)

Infrastructure Requirements Twinning of the Trans Canada highway and remaining key trade corridor routes (Rte’s 95 & 1) Federal border infrastructure program – NB’s application for funding

NBDOT Border Program Proposal Jan 2003, NBDOT submitted an application under the Border Infrastructure Fund for : –Woodstock crossing (Route 95) –St. Stephen crossing (Route 1) Proposed work totals approximately $100 million

Route 95 – Infrastructure Requirements Woodstock to Houlton Rte 95 Rte 2 (TCH) Woodstock Highest volume of truck traffic – part of N/S Atlantic trade corridor Rte 95 extends West from Rte 2 (14.5 Km section to US border)

Route 95 – Infrastructure Requirements Woodstock to Houlton Proposal: - Complete remaining section between Woodstock and Houlton border crossing Requirements: –Twinning of 12.2 km of Route 95 to the border ITS applications

Route 1 – Infrastructure Requirements St. Croix River to Waweig One of top 5 US/Cdn gateways for personal vehicles entering US Rte 1 is a component of the Atlantic trade corridor to the Calais- St.Stephen border Rte 1 Rte 2

Proposal: - Complete twinning the remaining section between Waweig (Rte 127) and St. Stephen – Ferry Point crossing Requirements: –New four lane alignment (24 km) –New St. Croix River bridge to the Calais Industrial Park ITS applications Route 1 – Infrastructure Requirements St. Croix River to Waweig

ITS Applications Project proposal includes assessment of ITS applications ITS technology can enhance –Security - Efficiency –Safety - Accessibility ITS can contribute to the economic prosperity of the region

Route 1 ITS applications FAST Dedicated lane approaching new bridge Third lane on bridge to complete FAST program infrastructure requirements NEXUS dedicated lane Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) on Route 1 Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station on Route 1 with Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) and Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) Advanced Traveller Information System - ATIS
