CIP Advisory Group Meeting ALA Midwinter Conference Saturday, January 16 th, 2010 Boston, MA ONIX-to-MARC Pilot Project Update Caroline Saccucci Senior Cataloging Specialist U.S. General Division Library of Congress

Background Started in June 2009  2 testers plus NLM  2 publishers Since December 2009  4 testers plus NLM  6 publishers Keep statistics  ONIX data availability, TOCs, summaries Almost 1,100 ONIX bib records created

Cataloging approach: TCEC The cataloger must: Make the selection for each element of the bib record Manipulate text to be in correct order Add ISBD punctuation Highlight text Select correct field tags in order

Cataloging approach: TCEC The cataloger can correct capitalization errors add any additional subfield coding add notes or other text …before the data is loaded to Voyager.

Cataloging approach: TCEC TCEC screen reflects the galley already Extra comparison usually unnecessary

Cataloging approach: ONIX Data is automatically preselected More like proof-reading Compare mode to note discrepancies But…

Cataloging approach: ONIX Data must be in Voyager before errors can be corrected  Discrepancies between galley and ONIX  Capitalization  Adding fields and other data/text Cataloger should look at galley to double check Cataloger must be vigilant to prevent errors

Time study results 6-week time study ONIX takes half the time as TCEC  80% processed using TCEC software completed in 2 minutes or less  80% processed using ONIX data completed in 1 minute or less Problems slow us down….

Problems we encountered Improper coding  Manuscript file, aka “the galley”  © page Discrepancies between ONIX and galley  Titles, subtitles, statements of responsibility, series, etc.  Requires more data manipulation  Sometimes bib record must be recataloged Symbols that prevent saving bib record No TOCs or summaries  Both important for users  keyword!

Handling problems Team meets regularly to discuss issues David Williamson responsive to tech needs David talks directly with publishers Publisher liaisons work with publishers  Request proper coding  Request more summaries

Benefits from ONIX Faster and more ergonomic More enriched data  TOCs  Summaries (ONIX and TCEC) Publisher data directly serves library community

Next steps Continue testing Add more publishers Continue communication Continue to refine David’s program
