First Colonies of America

 Jamestown  Located on today’s Virginia coast line  Started in 1607  Named Jamestown to honor King James of England The First Colony

 How did the colonist survive?  Many did not survive, Why?  Soil was too poor to farm and they had very little fresh water.  Who is John Smith?  Credited with saving the colony  He met the Indian chief Powhatan and traded corn and other crops Jamestown

 How did the Native Americans and colonist work together?  The Native Americans taught the colonist how to grow tobacco and other crops  Tobacco became a cash crop for the colonist  In 1619 the first slaves have arrived to work in the tobacco fields Jamestown

 Cash Crop  A cash crop is a crop that is grown just to be sold and make money off of it  Crop  A crop is grown to be used by the farmer, whether that is to feed his family or his livestock Cash Crop?

 Plymouth (Massachusetts)  In 1620 the Pilgrims left the Church of England; they were in search of religious freedom  The Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth in November, which was too late to grow crops. So how did they survive winter?  The Pilgrims received help from the local Native Americans; still almost half of the original number had died. The Second Colony

 The Mayflower  The name of the ship the Pilgrims boarded to come to America  101 passengers started the journey  Mayflower Compact  Agreement between the men aboard the ship stating that the people would govern themselves Plymouth

 When the spring arrived, the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, hunt deer and turkey, and fish  For the one year anniversary the Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated with a three day harvest festival (first Thanksgiving) in the Fall of 1621 Pilgrims and Native Americans
