DICTATORSHIP

What is Dictatorship? = Leaders hold absolute authority over the people Normally very militaristic, or run by military power Autocracy: one single person in power Oligarchy: small group in power

FASCISM

What is Fascism? = A strong government with social and economic control (works hand in hand with Communism) Led by a charismatic dictator Sense of fervent patriotism among population

SOCIALISM

What is Socialism? = where benefits of economy should be equally distributed among society Which countries incorporate socialism?  Europe/Canada

Why? Modern-Day socialism developed out of the Industrial Revolution - Bad conditions led to social and economic reform  The workers would rise up against the bosses and make everything equal Karl Marx – father of modern-day socialism

Characteristics of Social Economies Nationalization  Transportations, utilities  Public Welfare  Health care, free education, maternity leave, pensions Taxation  50-60% for middle class, 90% for upper class Centrally Planned Economy  Government plans economy so many years in advance

Pros and Cons In developing countries it appeals to people that want equality and change Evens out inequalities in society Gives workers and citizens more control over their daily lives Too much government involvement People can’t choose how to use their income Why work hard when your basic needs will be taken care of anyway?

COMMUNISM

What is Communism? = A system where the government owns and controls everything Developed by Karl Marx along with socialism

Karl Marx’s Theory First would be a dictatorship to gain control of all things Then the government would go away when the society had become classless. A classless society was the ideal situation. But!! The problem!?  PEOPLE LOVE POWER!

Characteristics of Communist Economies Role of the Communist Party  Holds all power Central Planning  Government plans every five years in advance on how things will be run and turn out Collectivization  Government taking control of all aspects of the nation  State Ownership  Government owning housing, banks, hospitals, stores

Communist Nations Most are in Asia  China  North Korea Cuba – Castro family has led since 1959
