MixtureMatter Fair Tests Chemical Reactions

Row 1, Col 1 What is a Heterogeneous mixture? Give the definition and an example. One substance is unevenly mixed with another. Looks like more than one.

1,2 What are the properties of a gas? Molecules freely move around. They are not closely bound together. Changes shape easily A solid can pass through it easily.

1,3 What is another name for a Fair Test And what does it stand for? CMS Test – Change something, Measure something, Keep everything else the same.

1,4 What are some signs that a chemical reaction has occurred? Change in colour or odor, a gas is produced.

2,1 What is a Homogeneous mixture? Give the definition and an example. One substance is evenly mixed with another. Looks like one thing.

2,2 List the properties of a solid. Molecules are attached and bunched together in a “solid” form. Doesn’t change shape easily. Another solid cannot pass through easily

2,3 In a Fair Test, how many variables do we change? Why? One. We want to see if the change variable has an influence on the measuring variable.

2,4 What is the difference between a reversible and irreversible change? In an irreversible change a chemical reaction has occurred and it is difficult if not impossible to get back the original substances in their original states.

3,1 What is a Suspension mixture? Give the definition and an example. A Heterogeneous Mixture.

3,2 List the properties of a liquid. Molecules fill the space of the container they are in. They can shape easily. A solid can pass through it.

3,3 In a Fair Test, what is the Measuring Variable? Why do we measure it? It is the variable we measure to see if it has been influenced (changed) by the change variable.

3,4 Mixing vinegar and baking soda causes what kind of change? Irreversible.

4,1 What is a Solution? Give the definition and an example. A type of Homogeneous mixture in which one substance is dissolved in anther.

4,2 Name the 2 changes of state that need to happen for a Solid to become a gas. Melting and Evaporation.

4,3 Why are Control Variables Important to Fair Tests? They ensure that the validity of the Fair Test. – They make sure the only thing causing a change to the measuring variable is the change variable.

4,4 When making crystals what kind of change occurred? Reversible.

5,1 In a mixture of Sugar and Water, which one is the solute and which on is the solvent? Sugar is the Solute. Water is the Solvent.

5,2 Name the 2 changes of state that need to happen for a gas to become a solid. Condensation and freezing.

5,3 Why do we call the various components of an experiment Variables? They are subject to change.

5,4 Baking a cake produces what kind of change? Irreversible.
