 The buckeye is a butterfly which belongs to the family of NYMPHALIDAE or BRUSH-FOOTED butterflies.  This butterfly is found in southern Manitoba,Ontario,Quebec and Nova Scotia and parts of United States and common in California coast,Central America and Colombia.  The scientific name of “buckeye butterfly”is “Junonia coenia”.  The habitats of these butterflies are subtropical to upper Sonoran and upper Austral zone in weedy places and open areas. cutagulta.com

 The upperside of the wings is brown, there are patterns of eyespots and and white bars can be seen on the wings. The eyespots are mainly to distract the predators.  The summer version of wings are yellowish in color and in cool temperature they have reddish brown wings with less markings.  Female Buckeye butterflies are larger than males and also female has broader wings and larger hindwing eyespots.  The size of the wings is: 1 5/ /4 inches ( cm). cutagulta.com

 These butterflies feed on nectar and fluids from the mud. During the day males perch on low plants or bare ground to watch for females.  They fly periodically to chase other flying objects. The females lay their eggs on the upper side of the leaf.  The caterpillars feed on the flowers and fruit of the plant. Caterpillars also feed on plants of the plantain family, such as Plantago; and the Acanthus family including ruellia (Ruellia nodiflora)  Plantson which they depend are from families including toadflax, False Foxglove, plantain and twinflower. cutagulta.com

 Resident in the southern United States and north along the coasts to central California and North Carolina; south to Bermuda, Cuba, Isle of Pines, and southern Mexico. Adults from the south's first brood migrate north in late spring and summer to temporarily colonize most of the United States and parts of southern Canada. cutagulta.com
