Problems on Data Flow In The Gambia Within The Statistics Offices 26 th – 29 th JUNE, Ethiopia The Gambia Bureau Of statistics. (GBOS)

What is The Main Problem ? The Gambia Bureau of Statistics is mandated to run the statistics data flow efficently to enable timely data to users and researchers. This is lacking in the key institutions as most institution don’t have proper statistics unit. Most of the staff are not statistician or have no idea in this important area.

Objectives of the data flow The objectives of data flow is to make sure people are sensitise on the issue as to beaware of the importance and the need for data. Without data the world will not move. Data flow will enlighten our lives and make life easy for our daily work. The quality cannot be compromise. So all agencies providing statistics should be harmonise.

Archiving data for the history for data flow:- To Provides a central access point for statistical information of a country to allow data flow. With an increase demand for microdata from developing countries particularly with emphasis on objective monitoring and evaluation of poverty reduction policies as well as tracking progress on the MDGs, comes the needfor the urgency of data flow within statistics offices with train personel to handle this demand.

Difficulty in NSO Statistics unit is not establish in different departments Data is being keep by individuals as their own property in computers, USB, etc People leave their offices just to be told I can,t give you the data. It is frustrating.

Cont. My computer is not working just to make excuses I am on a workshop or attending a meeting. Who are you that I should give you my data (laugh) This attitude will hinder the progress of data flow by the NSOs

The Way Forward Ensure effectiveness of data flow through out the NSOs offices and beyond. Develop policies for data flow, archiving and diesemination Train more statisticians and create unit in the different NSO and other departments for easy flow of data in the Gambia to make life easy for data users and researchers, etc..
