Perspectives of biodiversity conservation, among these, rare and endangered animals species, in hunting reserves in Russia Belousova Anna 1, Mejnev Anton 2 1 FBGU «All-Russian Research Institute for Environment Protection» 2 Department for Hunting and Hunting and Hunting Use, Ministry for Natural Resources of Russian Federation Ashgabat, September 2015

Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity is the strategy challenge of human development at present. The conservation of rare and endangered species – is the important issue of biodiversity conservation. The biodiversity conservation is significant governmental task, which should be integrated in different branches of economy.

HUNTING RESERVES IN RUSSIA Hunting reserves in Russia is the traditional type of fauna utilization and natural territorial complexes - hunting lands. The main aim of the hunting reserve is the maintain and increase of hunting species populations – that corresponded with the purpose of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HUNTING AS ECONOMICAL BRANCH Resources – hunting animals and hunting lands, renewable, limited. Process flows - hunting, protection and reproducing of wild mammals and birds. Production and services – meat of wild animals, furs, hunting trophies, medicine and technical raw products. Hunting – as activerecreation. Actitvites that required the special knowledge - in the field of biology, ecology, nature conservation, game management. Special socila-economical relations – regulated by special normative, rulers and traditions.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HUNTING AS ECONOMICAL BRANCH TRADITIONS, CULTURE, RECREATION SUSTAINABLE USE of HUNTING RESOURCES and CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY Area of 1,6 milliard ha Protect, use and reproduce 226 species of hunting fauna species Economical assessment of hunting resources more the 87 milliard roubles More the 80 thousand vacancies EMPLOYMENT, PRODUCTION, SERVICES IMPUT IN STATE FOOD SUPPLY SECYRITY Production and services about 16,2 milliard roubles More the 5000 enterprises and organizations Sport Ecological tourism More then 12 mln. hunters and their family members Traditional occupation for more then 50 local nationalities of small-size nations in 20 regions of Russia

STRUCTURE OF HUNTING LANDS AND DISTRIBUTION OF HUNTING ANIMALS IN RUSSIA Area of hunting lands in Russian Federation ( ha ) mln ha hunting lands: Public organizations Generally accessible Commercial Distribution of main hunting animals in hunting lands of Russian Federation, % Elk Roe Boar

DISTRIBUTION OF NUMBER OF BIRDS and MAMMALS SPECIES via THREE CATEGORIES

OPPORTUNITIES TO CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF BIODIVERSITY AT THE TERRITORIES OF HUNTING RESERVES AND HUNTING ZAKAZNIKS 1. Hunting reserves are interested in protection of habitats and increasing og their productivities. 2. Increasing of qualities of territories enhances their capacities and plays in favor for increasing of biodiversity and survival of rare and endangered species. 3. Organized control for illegal hunting and anthropogenous disturbances. 4. State natural zoological zakazniks aims to protection of fauna species, and designates to reproduction, protection of hunting animals (their habitats), maintains of their populations at optimal level (scientific proved) and enrichments of neighboring areas. -Include in contact with hunting reserves states concerned conservation of rare species and especially valuable habitats. - Determine the breeding areas, that did not disturbed by hunting activities. - Organize the specialized zoological hunting reserves in aims to reproduce the hunting fauna and enrichment the adjacent territories. WAYS and METGODS for RARE and ENDANGERED SPECIES CONSERVATION

CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY AT THE TERRITORIES OF STATE HUNTING ZAKAZNIKS IN REGIONS (in example of Sverdlovskaya oblast) NameHunting speciesProtected species State zoological hunting zakaznik Baikalovskiy Wolf, Fox, Racoon dog, Bobcat, Marten, Badger, Mountain hare, Wild boar, ducks Roe State zoological hunting zakaznik Bognanovichskiy Wolf, Fox, Racoon dog, Bobcat, Marten, American mink, Badger, Eurasian beaver, Muskrat, Mountain hare, Elk, Wild boar, ducks, Black grouse Roe State zoological hunting zakaznik Irbitskiy Wolf, Fox, Racoon dog, Bobcat, Marten, Badger, Eurasian beaver, Mountain hare, Elk, Wild boar, ducks Western capercaillie, Black grouse, Hazel grouse State zoological hunting zakaznik Taborinskiy Wolf, Brown bear, Sable, Mountain hare, Elk, ducks, Black grouse, Hazel grouse Eurasian beaver, Mink - The hunting is prohibited at the territories of complex zakazniks.

SUPPORT OF CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION AND MONITORING OF RARE AND ENDANGERED FAUNA SPECIES, INCLUDED IN RUSSIAN RED DATA BOOK Russian desman Protection of Russian desman at specialized experimental desman hunting reserve – Seltsovskoye, Vladimirskaya oblast. Organized in 1985, area – 17 thousand ha. The main principle – combination of desman protection and rational use of hunting fauna. The following activities are prohibited in the territory: - fishing with stake nets; -pasturing at the 100 m band around the water sources; -forest cutting (exclude the sanitarian) and bushes cutting around the water sources; -presence of tourists and sport-fishermen on water sources and near water sources; -using of agricultural chemicals and melioration without approval by State hunting inspection. Russian desman - Desmana moschata Red Data Book RF – proposed status – Critically endangered (1). IUCN Red List – VU, vulnerable

ROGRAMM FOR RUSSIAN DESMAN CONSERVATION In aims to protection of Russian desman habitats and preventing of it’s decreasing : - regular monitoring of Russian desman populations and qualities of it’s habitats at the model places; - development of network of protected areas and specialized hunting reserve for Russian desman protection; -starting of bio-technical activities for restoration of conditions suitable for desman a the anthropogenic disturbed territories, at first hand, near river bands. The Russian desman population reaches about 7.8 % at the area where the special effective activities applied. PROTECTION AND MONITORING OF RARE AND ENDANGERED FAUNA SPECIES, INCLUDED IN RUSSIAN RED DATA BOOK Russian desman - Desmana moschata Red Data Book RF – proposed status – Critically endangered (1). IUCN Red List – VU, vulnerable.

Amur tiger Panthera tigris altaica Red Data Book RF –proposed status - RARE (3) IUCN Red List – Endangered (EN) Federal Budjet Organization “State Experimental Hunting Reserve “Orlinoe” under the Ministry of natural Resources RF. Located in Primorskiy Kray. Area- about 100 thousand ha. Provide the measures and activities for reproducing and maintaining the high density of Ungulates (Manchurian wapiti, Roe dear, Sika deer, Wild boar, Roe). Provides 32 feeding stations, preserves and lays out about 5 tonnes of hay, 2000 brooms, more then 16 tonnes of crops and feed concentrates, plows 32 ha of feeding fileds. The illegal hunting stopped. Ten tigers inhabit the territory, 2 tigers come regularly. Governmental Hunting Reserve provides hunting animals (Manchurian wapiti, Sika deer, Roe and Wild boar) to the Center of the Tirger Rehabilitation and Reintroduction for the development of hunting behavior of young tigers and feeding of adult tigers. PROTECTION AND MONITORING OF RARE AND ENDANGERED FAUNA SPECIES, INCLUDED IN RUSSIAN RED DATA BOOK
