Social Media & Its Purpose o Interactive platforms where content is created, distributed and shared by individuals on the web. Social media websites and applications allow users to create and exchange user-generated content where people talk, share information, participate and network through technologies (What is Social Media ?, 2015).

o Mass media is passive participation & Social media is active participation o Mass media is One way “one-to-many” & Social media is Two-way “one-to-one” communication o Mass media targets isolated consumers & Social media connects consumers o Mass media is brand-driven & Social media is service and consumer-driven o Mass media is limited reach & Social media offers unlimited reach

1971- First Usenet World Wide Web o Within the last decade, social media has become one of the most powerful sources for news updates, online collaboration, networking, viral marketing and entertainment.marketing o Social media changes in the last years have been social networking. Its transformed the relationship between the public and those communicating with them. Recent Changes of Social Media & Today’s Social Media (What is Social Media?, 2015).

“Web 1.0” & “Web 2.0” Before the term Web 2.0 was coined in 1999, Internet pages featured mostly static content such as text and graphics. Websites operated on Web 1.0 technologies, where website hosts and owners were the primary content contributors. Some would say Web 1.0 was a “ read-only web” and Web 2.0 is a “read-write web”. Online information targeted a mostly passive audience that received rather than contributed content. The introduction of Web 2.0 Internet technologies around the turn of the 21 st century, social media venues such as blogs began to allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in virtual communities. Specifically, social media began meeting the characteristics of Web 2.0 websites, providing a rich user experience, dynamic content, scalability, openness and collective intelligence.  Social medial is one of the three pillars of SEO  Facebook continues to lead the pack of active monthly users  Google+ is gaining steam, second highest monthly users  Consistent trend in 2013 toward sharing through image and video  Pintrest shedding “women only” reputation  Micro video on the rise  LinkedIn becomes enormous for business to business marketers Important trends in Social Media today (Social Media Trends to Watch for in 2014, 2015).

Can offer tremendous value to your supporters and organization Low cost, effective marketing channel Build awareness by driving traffic to your website and social media properties Growth to organizations influence by cost-effectively acquiring new supporters, donors and volunteers Humanize your organization  Why does this matter to nonprofits? At the core of social media are the social elements it enables. In short, it’s all about connections. To nonprofits, this is crucial as these tools help build relationships by relating to the personal interests and emotions of supporters, thus building stronger bonds. Increase trust, loyalty and allow supporters to share their voice through feedback forums.
