EARLY LIFE CONT. As a young girl, she lived in white neighborhoods, where she felt unsafe and faced racism During high school she interned at the Miami Herald During the summers, she was on programs for aspiring writers at Northwestern University

After beginning career as a reporter at Miami Herald, she interviewed Anne Rice, and got inspired to pursue her career as a novelist Worked for Miami Herald as a journalist and columnist when she wrote her first novel The between Earned B.S in Journalism M.A in English literature
