Grecia Romero 3/10/2014 BIOTECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS BIOTECHNOLOGY? Biotechnology provides products and technologies to combat rare diseases, reduce our environmental foot print and use less and cleaner energy. Specialists in this field alter the genetic material of living organisms to create new medicines. Biotechnologists focus mainly in pharmaceutical research, agriculture, and the manufacture of biotechnology products.

CLASSES NEEDED Organic Chemistry (4 years) Calculus (4 years) Principles of Physics (4 years) Nanotechnology (4 years)

NATURE OF JOB AFTER GRADUATION After graduating it would be required to enter to biotechnology programs to prepare you for a stable job, for example the University of Houston provides a great program focusing in biotechnology involving it with agriculture, medical and pharmaceutical research, and the manufacture of medical devices.

UNIVERSITIES SPECIALIZED IN BIOTECHNOLOGY  Purdue University(West Lafayette, Indiana) strongly committed to biotechnology education. Average GPA: 3.50  Boston University: excellence of biomedical engineering department. Average GPA: 3.45  University of Houston: the bachelor degree program in biotechnology prepares students in the critically important technology industry.

BEGINNING SALARY Beginning Salary (Approximately) : $19,000 - $24,000 Annually With experience: $76,000 - $83,000 Annually

HOW MANY YEARS DOES THIS CAREER TAKE AND WHERE CAN A PERSON WORK AFTER FINISHING THE CAREER? Biotechnology usually takes 4 years by taking a Bachelor’s Degree program, but if you want to specialize in a specific area like agriculture or environment the years will increase as well as your salary. There are different companies in where to work for: Abbiotech (San Diego, CA) researching antibodies and peptides Integra Life Sciences (Irvine, CA) developing medical devices Bio Duro (San Diego, CA) drug discovery services

QUESTIONS What do you find interesting about this career? Before watching this presentation, what did you expect this career was focused in? Is biotechnology indispensable in your life?

CONCLUSION Biotechnology will always be needed in our environment, it helps us by developing micro-organisms and plants to clean polluted water and land, create renewable sources of energy such as biodiesel and improves animal feed. Without it we wouldn’t have medical devices that are indispensable in our lives and for the future generations.
