Warm-up Academic Language North: East: West: Discourse Roles North: East: West: Write to Learn: Now that Abigail is gone, what do you predict will happen with the courts and the prosecution of “witches”? Classroom Talk

Content Language Objective Students will read Act IV of The Crucible, and analyze (through writing and discussion) how Miller builds tension and drama through important thematic ideas and events, using: Student notes Collaborative grouping

Tension Evokes emotion-stress, anxiety, worry, fear, etc. on both the reader and the characters. “ tension can be compared to an electrical current that runs through a story. The weaker a current, the less the story transmits to an audience. The great the current, the greater the involvement of the audience

Tension Anticipation of Conflict: The reader and characters know a problem is on the horizon Changes that impact the Character: as soon as one problem is solved, another pops up A series of unexpected events or revelations: The events surprise both the reader and the protagonist. Sometimes the reader knows something but the character doesn’t. (Irony)

Tension Torment: The Protagonist must suffer both internally and externally. The tests must increase in difficulty until the protagonist is pushed to his limits. Secrets: Protagonist needs to have skeletons in his closet the precipitate his reactions to events Dialogue: Not just idle conversation; must be a power struggle and have a winner and a loser

Tension Ebbs and flows: there needs to be variations in the levels of tension throughout the story A sense of urgency: If the character doesn’t act soon they are doomed.
