4 1.1 Motivation Poor communication among members resulting in integration problem. Network resources require for costly and bandwidth capacities. Companies must learn to communicate and work in a collaborative design and development endeavor.

2003 NTHU IEEM Objectives Accelerate fulfillment, quicker delivery. Reduce product development time and costs. Resource sharing. Learning through trading partner network.

2003 NTHU IEEM 6 Systems must enable changes in product development and communicated to all parties involved in the project.

2003 NTHU IEEM 7 Multiple users at different locations can work on one design collaboratively and simultaneously. No travel and no delay. Higher Productivity, Lower cost, Better Traceablity.

2003 NTHU IEEM Research Domain There are many collaborative projects using the Internet and many partners who work together exchanging files and interacting on shared digital models. Collaborative activities are an important application of computer technology. Many software develop many tools to support such collaboration. But what are the implications for tools that support this work? Our project use Access Grid for design project as an example.

2003 NTHU IEEM 15 Introduction & History The Access Grid was developed by the Futures Lab at the Argonne National Laboratory’s Math and Computer Sciences Division. They defined it this way: The Access Grid™ is an ensemble of resources including multimedia large-format displays, presentation and interactive environments, and interfaces to Grid middleware and to visualization environments. These resources are used to support group-to-group interactions across the Grid. For example, the Access Grid (AG) is used for large-scale distributed meetings, collaborative work sessions, seminars, lectures, tutorials, and training. The Access Grid thus differs from desktop-to- desktop tools that focus on individual communication. The requirements of the Access Grid project were: Group to group interaction Multiple Locations Comfortable environment

2003 NTHU IEEM 28 Our Future Research Test various network connections, like ADSL, T1…, and solve connecting problems. Debug the AG program source code and try to develop some functions, like shared-presentation, electronic whiteboard or others. Modify AG and apply to collaborative workshop in the web server or others.
