You can make a range into a table We start by loading data from a file into a worksheet Then, we’ll convert the resulting range into a table This is done on a Mac, but the Windows process is very similar

Loading the data… In the data tab, under External Data Sources, choose Text, then navigate to your data file

Use the Text Import Wizard; our data is delimited

We chose commas

You can choose a format and also choose to skip a column…

Insert the data on the current worksheet or create a new one…

Here’s the spreadsheet with the data entered. Using the advanced features, you can link this data to your external text file or database so it can be updated when the file is. To add additional data by hand, type it on the line after the last line. Charts based on the table will update when you update the table data.

Select all the data and go to the Tables tab (on Mac) and select New (the leftmost icon in the ribbon)

Just after creating the table…

The completed table, scrolled back to the top. Note the default features such as alternate line shading and the headers with their drop-down filters.

Click the tab next to Volume to see this menu that lets you sort and filter the data. Any changes you make can be restored later.

Filtering Choices You can also sort in ascending or descending order along with filtering.

Summary Creating a table allows you to investigate and manipulate your data using a wide variety of sorts and filters The table can be linked to a chart so if you add data to the table, it also gets added to the chart It can also be linked to an external text file or database
