ANALYZING SPEECHES HOW DO EXPERIENCED READERS APPROACH A SPEECH?

THINK ABOUT THE AUDIENCE REMEMBER, ALL SPEECHES WERE WRITTEN TO BE HEARD BY AN AUDIENCE, YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE AUDIENCE THAT WAS INTENDED TO HEAR THE SPEECH. ASK YOURSELF: WHO WAS THIS SPEECH WRITTEN FOR? WHO IS THE AUDIENCE? TIME PERIOD? ATTITUDES? WHAT IS THE MESSAGE THE SPEECH WRITER IS TRYING TO DELIVER TO THIS AUDIENCE?

AUTHOR’S PURPOSE AND CHOICES THE AUTHOR WILL MAKE CHOICES BASED ON WHO THEIR AUDIENCE IS, YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE CHOICES THEY MAKE. LOOK FOR: TONE WORDS REPETITION PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE

CONSIDER THE TIME PERIOD ASK YOURSELF WHEN THE SPEECH WAS WRITTEN, THEN THINK ABOUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD AT THAT TIME. USE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY TO HELP YOU BETTER UNDERSTAND BOTH THE SPEAKER AND THE AUDIENCE. TURN AND TALK, WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE U.S. THAT CAUSED PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT TO DELIVER HIS SPEECH TO THE NATION?

YOU TRY LISTEN TO THE SPEECH AS YOU LISTEN, LOOK FOR TONE WORDS AND WORDS OR PHRASES THAT REPEAT, JOT THEM DOWN IN YOUR DAYBOOK WHAT IS THE TONE OF THIS SPEECH? WHY DOES FDR REPEAT WORDS OR PHRASES? WHAT IMPACT DOES THIS HAVE ON THE SPEECH?

QUICK WRITE- IN YOUR DAYBOOK REREAD THE SPEECH CONSIDERING THE TONE, AUTHOR’S WORD CHOICE, AUDIENCE AND TIME PERIOD. THEN ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF “A DAY OF INFAMY”? USE EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER WHAT IMPACT DID THIS SPEECH HAVE?
