Education-Related “wishes” to help children learn and develop  1. Wonder  2. Desire  3. Passion  4. Risk Taking  5. Confidence  6. Complexity  7. Engagement  8. Practicality  9. Ownership  10. Knowing their stuff

Theories of Intellectual Development  Howard Gardner- Intelligence is the ability to solve problems or make something or fashion a product.  Jean Piaget- Constructivist theory and developmental stages- intelligence is an adaptation, an ongoing construction of knowledge.  Lev Vygotsky- intelligence is developmental but utilizes a mentor or mentor text for the novice. Art is a complex process of balancing the environment.  All define intelligence as an activity and a process.  John Dewey- learn by doing  Jerome Bruner- discovery learning

Translation Through Representation  Translate knowledge into an artistic expression- requires working with ideas rather than just absorbing them.  Translation leads to metaphor.  The role of metaphor is fundamental to intellectual development.  Read pg. 36  Think about it: What does it mean to be a learner?  How does your representation show your understanding?  Have students give oral or written explanation with the product.  Read Summary p. 47
