KQ: How can I state the strengths and weaknesses of different types of research methods? L.O-To be able to explain what research methods means. To be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different types of social research. To do now To do now: Write down all the research methods you can think of! Think about the research you did in your controlled assessment. :

Data collection: Strengths:Weakness: it provides data which can be easily manipulated questionnaires can provide very specific/targeted information closed questions produce standard responses closed questions produce fact and exclude feelings choice of sampling technique can be crucial to data problems with collecting data

Interview methods: Strengths:Weakness: open questions allow individual response helps to explain social phenomena collection methods personal interview/direct observation open questions produce data difficult to quantify personal methods of collection can introduce bias.

Participant observation: Strengths:Weakness: detailed qualitative information studying behaviour in a natural setting relatively cheap time consuming observer cannot always be present observation can affect behaviour

Media sources: Strengths:Weakness: news reports, magazine articles and advertisements provide information specialist sources all are written for a purpose they are potentially biased they present selective information

Secondary sources: Strengths:Weakness: a lot of sources available easily accessible relatively cheap potentially out of date potentially biased largely quantitative information

In-depth interview: Strengths:Weakness: detailed qualitative information valid primary data body language time consuming potential interviewer bias embarrassment factor

Structured interview (all interviews are the same!): Strengths:Weakness: detailed qualitative information valid primary data body language time consuming potential interviewer bias embarrassment factor
