When to wash hands Using the restroom Handling raw meat products Taking out garbage Touching hair, face, body Touching clothing/aprons Sneezing, coughing, using tissues Handling chemicals Cleaning dirty tables/dishes Handling money Smoking, eating, drinking, chewing gum, chewing tobacco Touching anything that may contaminate hands- dirty equipment, work surfaces, towels, etc

Rhinovirus (common cold) Staphylococcal food poisoning (vomiting, diarrhea) Norovirus (vomiting, diarrhea) Flu

Hepatitis A (nausea, vomiting, jaundice) Rotavirus (vomiting, diarrhea) Giardiasis (nausea, gas, weight loss) Cyclosporiasis (watery diarrhea) Cryptosporidiosis (severe diarrhea) Shigellosis (bloody diarrhea, vomiting)

Washing hands is… Water at least 100 degrees, or as hot as you can stand it. Scrub all surfaces of hands. Use a new paper towel.

Washing hands is not… Rubbing with sanitizer Rinsing without soap Using cold water Washing, then drying on a dirty cloth/apron/pants Rubbing dirty hands with a cloth Wiping hands on your pants Spit-shining Rubbing hands together

Sanitizers ≠ Hand washing! Only use hand sanitizers when there is no visible debris on the hands. The required volume must keep the hand surfaces wet for at least 15 seconds or as indicated by the manufacturer. Hands must air dry. Consider this: If someone gets sick, can you prove you washed your hands if there is a bottle of sanitizer close by?
