MATHS IN THE REAL WORLD October 2015

YEAR 1 What a super week! Year 1 had an amazing time creating their very own ‘Garden’ in their outdoor area. We focused on repeated patterns to decorate our plant pots as well as using some amazing addition skills to find the total of different gardening equipment.

YEAR 2 Year 2 had lots of fun during Maths in the Real World week! We began by receiving a letter from Superboy explaining that he had a problem but there was a twist! The letter he had sent was coded and so the children worked hard to decode the letter. Inside the letter were a series of co- ordinates that led the children to their next clue! They needed to plot the co-ordinates in order to reveal what the problem was! The children plotted the co-ordinates and found that Superboy had lost some 3D shapes and the co- ordinates revealed the shapes that Superboy needed! The final task involved the children generating their own nets to create the lost shapes for Superboy! The children used lots of maths skills and became excellent problem solvers! Well Done Year 2!

YEAR 3 In Year 3, the children have been designing rockets for NASA! They used their multiplication and addition skills, when working out how much the rocket parts would cost to build. They had to work to a budget, so problem solving was an important part of their learning!

YEAR 4 This week Year 4 have been learning all about the strength of triangles in bridges. Their brief was they had to design a bridge to withhold the weight of 2 cans using only paper and tape! They were given a budget too, to buy extra items they felt they needed to win.

YEAR 5 This week, Year 5 zoomed into action as Formula 1 experts and used all kinds of skills, especially collaboration, to take on different tasks sent by the F1 organisers! The children designed super new race cars with high race performance value but managed to stick within budget with their careful budgeting! Following this, the children watched the famous F1 racers in their qualifying races, recorded their lap times to the millisecond and then ordered them to find the fastest times. Today, the children will be using their measuring and calculating skills to work out the distances raced by the drivers when they compete at Yas Marina.

YEAR 6 Year 6 have worked collaboratively to develop their own chocolate theme park. They were set the challenge: ‘The year is The Dubai Expo is about to launch in Dubai. Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has decided that a chocolate inspired theme park should be opened as the centre piece of the even’. They have had to think about budgeting, profit and their target market which all links nicely to their topic ‘Dragons Den’. They have solved worded problems using the four operations. They used they knowledge of coordinates to design their theme park. Well done Year 6!
