WARM-UP 10/5 What is a Venn-Diagram? What is it’s purpose?

LAST HOUSING PROJECT: CLUE Everyone: write down a 2-3 sentence summary of what the “Clue” group’s skit is about.

NOTES 10/5 COMPARE AND CONTRAST

VENN-DIAGRAMS

Venn-Diagrams compare and contrast. If something is found in one circle alone, it contrasts, or is different from, everything else. Fish lay eggs, while whales have live births If the circles overlap, they are comparable, or have that in common. Fish and whales can both swim.

CONTRASTIVE STRUCTURE Use your body; slight shift. FOR BIRTH, FISH DO- DO? EGGS LAY. FOR BIRTH, WHALE DO- DO? BABY BORN LIVE.

COMPARISONS Remember indexing Point to where something is represented Sign SAME, BOTH.

CREATE YOUR OWN VENN-DIAGRAM Use construction paper or printer paper. Use colors. Be neat. Compare and contrast: Two rooms in the house Or Two cities Must have at least 5 in each category!! Be prepared to sign it. Remember grammar like, LIVING ROOM, TV HAVE. BASEMENT, TV HAVE SAME. Due tomorrow at the start of class!

10/6 Subject: Deaf Culture Quiz Feel free to move around, sit on the floor, at the table, or move your chair away from others. I will move you if I need to. Turn in quiz and scantron to the front table when you finish. Pick up the “ASL Teaching Services” packet and highlight or underline important information.

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT Practice in groups using contrastive structure when discussing your venn-diagram. Use apps on your phone or ASL dictionary to learn signs you are unaware of. Silent activity!! Record yourselves using your phone (or borrow someone else’s) and it to me through Google Drive (free download, if you don’t already have it). to: Due today!! Everyone stays in the classroom- no recording in the hallway.

WARM-UP 10/7 Turn in your Venn-Diagram if you didn’t turn it in yesterday. Check the list to see if I received your video. If I didn’t, try to send it again right now. Write down directions from your house to Elkins High School. Think about things around the city Ex: Turn right at the Chick-Fil-A restaurant.

GIVING DIRECTIONS Always from the signer’s perspective, not the audience’s. NMS to show distance are important. Non-manual signals

NMS (NON-MANUAL SIGNALS) Near Eyes squinted Teeth clinched Hands stay near

NMS (NON-MANUAL SIGNALS) Medium-distance Eyes open naturally Mouth slightly pursed Hands move a moderate way away from your body

NMS (NON-MANUAL SIGNALS) Far Eyebrows up Mouth open Hands move far away
