ELLIS ISLAND 5DRIM

Ellis Island is located in Upper New York Bay in the Port of New York and New Jersey, United States. It opened in 1892 as a federal immigration. It closed in 1954: for over 60 years it was the gateway for millions of Americans to the United States

People from all over the world There were arrivals from northern and western Europe and also from southern and eastern Europe. There were also: Poles, Hungarians, Czechs, Serbs, Slovaks, Italians, Jews and Greeks. And also non-Europeans from Syria, Turkey and Armenia.

Immigrants to Ellis Island  After an arduous sea voyage, passengers with their few possessions moved into barges arrived to Ellis Island.  Immigrants were tagged with information from the ship’s registry and passed through long lines.

Ellis Island today  Ellis Island opened to the public in 1976  Today visitors can tour the Ellis Island Immigration Museum  People can trace their ancestors Ellis Island remains a central destination for millions of Americans
