Fostering Technology in Classrooms to Increase Student Participation Amanda Sedberry Dr. Kathleen Lunsford-Instructor EDU671 Ashford University May 5, 2015

Area of Focus The purpose of this study is see if the integration of technology into a culinary arts classroom class will impact students’ participation. Related Literature  It has been found that using devices such as an iPad has “increased engagement of students…and in this endeavor we should be making a maximum use of the features of current technology” (Manuguerra & Petocz, 2011, pg. 62).  Websites such as a blog, Facebook, or Twitter offer a student an online environment that helps to engage the students further into the classroom lessons and helps to enrich the students experiences through interactive learning (Irwin, Ball, Desbrow & Leveritt, 2012).

Variables  Instructor teaches multiple classes at once  Student attendance  Old facility (electrical problems)  Students are at different levels of their degree progress  Students are comprised of different cultural, ethnical and socioeconomic backgrounds Research Questions  How will the integration of technology into the culinary arts curriculum impact students’ classroom participation?  What forms of technology work best for a diverse group of culinary arts students?

Data Collection, Considerations and Analysis  Qualitative & Quantitative data will be collected  Data was collected by using both pre- and pos-surveys  Teacher observations  Student Feedback via surveys  Consent forms were eight students involved in study  All information will be kept confidential  Researcher presumptions will be considered as the action research plan directly affects my classes  Data will be analyzed and presented at the end of the 16 week study  After 16 weeks surveys showed 25% increase in student participation

Intervention and Action Plan  Surveys will be conducted pre and post study  Technology will be introduced slowly at the beginning of the 16 weeks of school  Introduction of different technological devices to students  Instructor will provide handouts, videos as well as hands- on training for new technology before it is used.  Students will use different forms of technology to complete in class and homework assignments.  Students will use technology both individually and in groups  Technology integrated into the classroom:  Tablets  Smartphones  World Wide Web: Blogs, Social Media, and online videos  Laptops
