CERN Structure 2016

Department structure 2016, from PH to EP Totem integrated in CMS team Groups and Teams: ATLAS CMS LHCb ALICE SME: All non-LHC experiments LCD: Linear Collider Detector Support groups DT: Detector Technology ESE: Electronics SFT: Software for experiments DI: DH Head Office AGS: Adminstration and General Services (Secretarial Support, Space Management and Infrastructure, Users’ Office) TH becomes department EP AGS Intention to create a new group for Neutrino Physics

Department Head Office (DI) Department management and personnel with specific or ad-hoc functions or roles Department Management DH Manfred Krammer DDH Roger Forty DDH Ferdinand Hahn DPO Catherine Decosse 1 section: DI-SO Safety Office (O. Beltramello) supports DH as responsible for safety in EP (+TH)

EP Department Mandate Support the experiments that make up the scientific programme of CERN. Scientific programme: Flagship project LHC: ATLAS, CMS. LHCb, ALICE, minor contribution to smaller experiments (TOTEM, MoEDAL, LHCf) Broad “diversity” programme, smaller and less visible, but nevertheless important Low-energy nuclear physics (ISOLDE, nTOF) Antimatter studies (AEgIS, ALPHA, ASACSA, ATRAP, BASE, GBAR) Fixed-target physics at the SPS (COMPASS, NA61, NA62,…) Multidisciplinary studies (CLOUD, CAST, OSQAR,...) R&D for future activities: HL-LHC, Linear colliders (mainly for CLIC), FCC (Future Circular Collider, 100 TeV pp, e+e-), Neutrino Platform, SHiP,... Limited direct involvement of CERN as an institute in other than LHC experiments. However, CERN is fullfilling its role as the “central laboratory” for Particle Physics in Europe by providing accelerators, infrastructure for experiments and infrastructure for users.

Personnel in the Department A few numbers to illustrate the size of the department. Numbers from the PH Department from November 2015 and include therefore the Theory group.

All personnel employed and associated Almost 13000 in 2015!
