Notes #2 L’accord du passé composé AVEC ÊTRE

Une Révision  When using the helping verb “être” to form the passé composé, the past participle of the verb agrees in gender and number with the subject of the sentence.  What does this mean?

 1) If the subject of the sentence is feminine singular, you will add an “e” on to the end of the past participle. Ex: Valérie est allée au Canada. Elle est revenue hier soir.

 2) If the subject of the sentence is plural, you will add an “s” on to the end of the past participle.  Ex: Luc et Marc sont allés en Italie. Ils sont venus en avion.

 3)If the subject of the sentence is both feminine and plural, you will add “es” on to the end of the past participle.  Ex: Sara et Sophie sont allées à Paris. Elles sont parties hier.

Reminder  It is important to remember that this agreement rule is enforced ONLY in written French because there is no difference in pronunciation.  Ex: Luc est allé au Canada sounds the same as Ex: Sara est allée au Canada.
