MATTER: PROPERTIES AND CHANGES 5.P.2.2 Compare the weight of an object to the sum of the weight of its parts before and after an interaction. 5.P.2.3 Summarize.
Physical Change  Physical change is a change that occurs that does not change the identity of the substance  A change in which matter looks different.
What are chemical and physical changes?
A substance changes into another substance Odor Color Change Energy Released Gas or Solid is created.
Bellringer Identify the changes as PHYSICAL (P) OR CHEMCIAL (C)
Physical versus Chemical Properties. What is a property? Property: a characteristic of a substance that can be observed.
Physical and Chemical Changes New stuff is buff….
What are Physical Changes in Matter?
Chemical and Physical Changes Physical Changes Only changes physical properties, does not become a new substance (usually reversible). Only changes physical.
Chemical Reactions Review
What is matter? Notes Volume of an Irregular Object The volume of an irregular object can be found by measuring displaced water in a graduated cylinder.
What is matter? Bellwork: Put a check next to each item on the sheet that you believe to be matter.
MATTER: PROPERTIES AND CHANGES
PROPERTIES AND CHANGES Physical vs. Chemical. Physical Properties Any observation that can be made WITHOUT changing the composition of the matter. Examples:
Maples 11/15/10. Physical properties are traits that involve a substance by itself. Examples: color, odor, texture, boiling point, freezing point What.
Phases of Matter Solids are a phase of matter that have definite shape and volume Liquids are a phase of matter that can change shape, but not change volume.
What is matter? Everything is matter! Anything that takes up space is matter. Your desk, paper, pencil, and even the air you breath are matter.

Presentation transcript:

Chemical and Physical Changes Another Look at Chemical and Physical Changes Physical Changes Chemical Changes The matter is different. The old matter is no longer present. The original matter cannot be recovered. The particles of the substance are broken apart, and the atoms are rearranged into new particles, forming a new substance. The matter is the same. ( change in size or shape) The original matter can be recovered. (change in state of matter) The particles of the substance are rearranged.
