PSHE September 2015 Starter- What is the word which unites all of the images and is the title of our PSHE lesson today?

Transition just means CHANGE

Task 1 for all students in mixed pairs Make a list of all the changes you have faced so far in your life Now add changes which you think you will face in the future

Task 2 for all students- 2 pairs join together (group of 4) Make a timeline of your changes plotting events which occur from birth to 110 years of age! Make your timeline as big as possible-eg/. board markers across several tables Some events may occur more than once

Task 3 Now add colour to code how the changes made you feel- eg/ happy/ excited/ sad/ frightened, nervous Class feedback

Change often makes people feel anxious, even “good” changes can be stressful and unsettling. We can prevent some of the anxiety by being prepared and in control of the change. The rest of this lesson looks at the different situations in which you will find yourselves and strategies you may use to make change enjoyable.

Year 7 task As a group make a list of the differences between primary and secondary school. Add notes about how you coped or struggled with these changes Now using this information design an assembly or presentation which you could make to year 5 and 6 students in your old primary schools. The aim is to prepare them for the changes which they face when they arrive at All Saints’ in the future.

Your presentation needs to be aprox. 15 mins long It may include a powerpoint- music- drama- a prayer- a suitable hymn or piece of music- suitable youtube clips Your aim is to outline the changes they will face Give strategies to help them to be prepared for these changes!

Year 8 task You have completed your first year at All Saints’ with lots of success and maybe a little failure at times. Working as a group create an assembly or presentation which could be made to year 7 students. To be delivered before Christmas to support them to make their first year a success. Your presentation may include drama, powerpoint, prayer, suitable youtube clips or music, a hymn and must be no longer than 15mins.

It would be useful for your to start by outlining some of your successes and failures during year 7 Now use this to give tips for being successful and advice for them to avoid making mistakes. You could cover- Personal organisation strategies and routines Homework and revision Clubs- teams- chaplaincy- house captains- student council Friendships- getting on with your teachers Reporting problems

Year 9 and 11 task Working in groups of 3 -5 (mixed) You have both made your option choices and are now working on GCSE courses. You are to prepare a presentation or assembly for year 8 students to support them to be ready to start their GCSE courses next year. Think of the challenges you have faced, your successes and failures and use these experiences to pass on advice to support the year 8’s.

Your presentation may include drama, powerpoint, prayer, suitable youtube clips or music, a hymn and must be no longer than 15mins. It will be useful for you to include advice re; making options choices- how/ where/ what info. You need to make these decisions Advice for personal organisation, revision, coping with tests, keeping up to date with work Positive friendships with peers and your teachers Work/ life balance Advice for getting the most out of work experience Advice for getting the most out of the mock interviews

Year 10 task Preparing for your mock interviews and work experience. You will be working in 2’s or 3’s within your year group. Begin by imagining that you run your own business (of your own choice) and are looking to employ 1 person. Make a list of the skills you would like them to have as well as the personal qualities. Make a list of all the questions you would like to ask the candidates during an interview. Take a look at the questions you have created in your group and try to put together the best possible answers to these questions.

Yr 10 Role play Number your groups members 1,2 and 3 1= interviewer 2 and 3 are candidates on interview Now 2 and 3 go to another team to try a role play of an interview It would be great if you could show your ideas to the rest of the class during the plenary. Remember your body language as well as our answers. You could try showing a poor interview and getting the rest of the class to spot all of your deliberate mistakes!

Show and tell opportunity A chance for students to discuss or show what they have learned/ created

Plenary Any sort of change can make you feel stressed. It is often not the change itself but your reaction to the change. It is import to manage your response to change to avoid stress as this can be damaging to your health. Top tips to coping with change- Do not worry about things you can not control Break big problems and tasks into little ones Prepare for every event to the best of your ability Look at change as a positive opportunity rather then a threat Talk to trusted friends, members of staff, family Set realistic goals Avoid over scheduling- use a diary/ timetable at home and school Exercise regularly- eat a good balanced diet- participate in sports/ activities you enjoy every week
