Pronunciation Activity I will show you a base verb and you will tell me which area to put the word with the correct pronunciation and spelling.

Past progressive- Note 1 We use the past progressive to focus on the duration (how long) of a past action. Paul was reading a book last night. We don’t know if he finished reading the book. All we know is that he was reading.. He was reading a book at 11:30PM. We often use the past progressive with a specific time in the past. What were you doing at 9PM last night? I was sleeping.

Grammar Unit 3 The Titanic was sailing to New York. Some people were sleeping when it hit the iceberg. The was not carrying more than 3,000 passengers. How do you form the past progressive? Be- past (was/ were)+ verb(ing) Which verb forms are in the past progressive in the first two examples? Was sailing Were sleeping

Grammar Unit 3 How do you form the negative past progressive? Was/ were + not + verb(ing) Can you make these two sentences into negative past progressives? The Titanic was sailing to New York. The Titanic was not sailing to New York. Some people were sleeping when it hit the iceberg. Some people were not sleeping when it hit the iceberg.

Yes/ No questions How do you form yes/ not questions in the past progressive? Was/were + subject+ verb(ing) Band/ sank/ was/ when/ playing /it How would I use these words to make a yes or no question? Was the band playing when it sank? What are possible answers to this question? Yes, it was. No, it wasn’t.

Wh - questions Can you turn this question into a wh question? Was the band playing when it sank? What was the band doing when it sank? Why was the band playing when it sank? How do you form wh- questions? Wh- + was/were + subject + verb(ing)

Exercise 2 pp. 36

Simple past When do we use the simple past? I ate dinner. Paul read a book last night. Did I finish dinner? Did Paul read a book? Are these finished actions? Yes!

Simple past Do we use non-action verbs in the progressive? Are these sentences correct? I was loving the song. She was hearing about the disaster? No! Why?

Simple past and past progressive We use both of these tenses together to talk about an action that was stopped by another action. I was exercising when he called. While he was running, he fell. What is the past progressive verb? What is the simple past verb? We use when to introduce the simple past action. We use while to introduce the past progressive.

In these two examples, what word(s) come after while? While I was reading, Amy was sleeping. Amy was sleeping while I was reading. We use while to introduce the past progressive.

What is the meaning of this? Note 5 She was driving when she heard the news. I was eating dinner when the phone rang. I yelled when I saw the spider. John laughed when the student told a joke.

When We use when to introduce the simple past action. What word comes after when? She drove home when she heard the news. Which happened first? They ate when they got hungry. Which happened first? When I heard the news, I went to the hospital. Which happened first?
