Does Britain support child labour?

Do UK consumers support child labour?

What about children’s human rights?

Create a balanced argument: Does the UK support child labour? Ideas to include in your argument: What is child labour? Research some facts and figures about child labour. Include some photographs. What are the human rights of the child? What is meant by social responsibility? What is meant by relative poverty? What is meant by overall poverty? Which retailers/brands have been accused of child labour?

Child Labour In some countries there are millions of children living in abject poverty. They are often exploited and made to work for extremely low wages to help supplement the family income. An estimated 158 million children aged from five to 14 work in hazardous situations around the world. Do you think we should encourage and support Child Labour?

Fast Fashion at a Cheap Price In June 2008 hundreds of people protested outside Primark's Oxford Street store in London in response to ‘Panorama’ claims that the retailer had been using child labour. Do you agree with the protesters? Primark are not the only ones who stand accused. Other brands have included Nike, Coca Cola, Gap, Apple, Tesco, Asda, Abercrombie,

The Facts One in six children in the world today is involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development. Globally, between 210 and 240 million children are child labourers. 158 million of these children are engaged in hazardous work. Every year 22,000 children die in work-related accidents. 73 million working children are under 10. Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest proportion of working children - nearly one-third of children aged 14 and under. 5.7 million children are forced into debt bondage or other forms of slavery.

Should we shop ethically? “Let’s face it when you can buy a t-shirt for £4 compared to an ethical one for £20 it’s hard to justify spending the extra money!” Social responsibility; what can we do about it?

Defining Poverty Poverty is generally defined in two terms Relative/Overall Poverty Absolute Poverty In the UK and the developed world there are families who can be described as living in Relative Poverty.

Poverty In the Developing World Millions of people in the less developed world live in Absolute Poverty. In comparison those living in Relative Poverty are regarded as quite well off.
