Every number has a place. 2 5

And every place has a name. tens You cannot have more than 9 here. ones This is the ones place. This is the tens place. or here

How many cubes are there? 25

Put 25 in the ones place. tens ones

tens ones We can regroup (put cubes together) to make groups of ten. Oh no! There are too many in the ones place! We can regroup (put cubes together) to make groups of ten. What should we do? tens ones

tens ones There are still too many ones. Make another group of ten. Now there is 1 group of ten and 15 ones. tens ones

tens ones Now there are 2 groups of ten and 5 ones. Can we make another group of ten? No. Now there are 2 groups of ten and 5 ones. 2 tens and 5 ones = 25 tens ones

____ tens + ____ ones = _____ 5 5 55 tens ones

____ tens + ____ ones = _____ 3 8 38 tens ones

____ tens + ____ ones = _____ 4 2 42 tens ones

____ tens + ____ ones = _____ 9 9 tens ones

____ ten + ____ ones = _____ 1 6 16 tens ones

Part 1

We know we can show numbers with cubes. tens ones

We also know how to show numbers as tens and ones. 2 tens + 5 ones = 25

tens ones 2 tens + 5 ones = 25 20 + 5 = 25 Expanded Form 2 tens = 20

Let’s Review Numeral Words Cubes Tens and Ones Expanded Form 25 twenty-five Cubes Tens and Ones 2 tens 5 ones Expanded Form 20 + 5 = 25

Part 2

Now, let’s make a different addition sentence. tens ones

First, move a group of ten to the ones place. Take it apart. tens ones

Do we still have 25 cubes? Yes! tens ones

Now there is one group of ten and 15 ones. What changed? Now there is one group of ten and 15 ones. 1 tens 15 ones

Write the addition sentence. 1 tens 15 ones 10 + 15 = 25

Try it another way. 0 tens 25 ones 0 + 25 = 25

25 20 + 5 = 25 10 + 15 = 25 0 + 25 = 25

You can show the same information in a chart. 20 + 5 = 25 20 5 10 15 10 + 15 = 25 25 0 + 25 = 25
