THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM CALIBRATION – QUALIFICATION – INTEGRATION – VERIFICATION Presentation: Bertrand de la Porte General Philosophy Activities and Tests List The Calibration Site of Chambon la Foret Test Matrix Pre-Integration with IDPU Integrations in the spacecraft Housekeeping Team Support Operations

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM CALIBRATION – QUALIFICATION – INTEGRATION – VERIFICATION General Philosophy All sensors will be fully calibrated in the dedicated site of Chambon-la-Foret Frequency response (Transfer Function) and sensitivity (background noise) The SC and PA /EM will be tested at Qualification level The FMs will be tested for Acceptance Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM METROLOGY note (1) For the QUALIFICATION Model, the overall and interface dimensions, the Mass, the Centre of Gravity and the Moment of Inertia (M.o.I.) will be measured At ACCEPTANCE level, the interface dimensions, the Mass and the C.O.G will also be verified The M.o.I. is not so easy to measure (equipments difficult to find). It cannot be very different for small and identical devices. QUESTION: do we have to measure the M.o.I. for all models ? Bertrand delaPorte

THERMAL VACUUM note (2) The purpose of the Thermal Vacuum Tests is: i)to verify that the unit works in the temperature range. ii)to check that a thermal constraint do not destroy something. iii)to check the outgassing of the item. iv)to check the possible hot points inside a powerful unit. v)to verify the high voltages i) and ii) do not require the vacuum iii) depends on the design and could be tested one time only SCM is not concerned by iv) and v) A THERMAL VACUUM TEST IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE QUESTION: for the ACCEPTANCE level only, can we replace the Thermal Vacuum Test by a Thermal Cycling in air ? THEMIS-SCM THM-SCM-PDR – Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM – INTEGRATIONS 1. Pre-Integration with IDPU It is proposed to provide to UCB an « Interface Model » of the Pre-Amp with same Power, Command (input) and analog (output) interfaces with IDPU Cal Mode identification Cal Signal re-injected via a « feed-back connector » 2.Integration in the spacecraft Integration of the pre-amplifier Integration of the Search Coil Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM – INTEGRATION IN THE SPACECRAFT Integration of the pre-amplifier -all pre-amplifiers will be delivered with a « feed-back » connector at their input to protect the high impedance input against electrostatic discharges and to allow to run without an antenna connected - Incoming Inspection, Bench Test - Mechanical integration - Verification of the grounding and voltages on the harness connector - Connection to IDPU - [functional test possible with the feed-back connector] - Connection of the antenna via the boom harness (SC in a mu-metal box at the beginning) - Functional test Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM – INTEGRATION IN THE SPACECRAFT Integration of the Search-Coil - At the beginning of the integrations, the antenna must be inside a mu-metal box to be protected against the environmental noise (especially the 60 Hz) and to perform a few measurements. This is the single opportunity to verify that the right component is going to the right channel - When validated, the antenna is mounted on the boom but the PA is saturated by the 60 Hz and a real measurement is no longer possible When mounted on the boom, the Search Coil must be covered with a Thermal Blanket before the Thermal Vacuum Test of the spacecraft (if any) Expected to be done by UCB Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM – INTEGRATION - HOUSEKEEPING What is the housekeeping philosophy in Themis ? The role of the Housekeeping is to provide a few parameters that can be displayed in real time during the ground tests and in the commissioning to verify that the experiment is working HOUSEKEEPING FOR SCM: SCM-PWR-STATUS ( 1 bit ) SCM-CAL-STATUS ( 1 bit ) SCM-VOLT-MONITOR ( 8 bits ) SCM-MEAN-VAL-BX, __BY, __BZ ( 16 or 8 bits ) Mean average of |Bi| over one TM format (similar to r.m.s. value) Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM INTEGRATION - EGSE EGSE very simple for SCM mu-metal box Power Supply +/-10V, Signal Generator, Oscillo – for Bench Test Portable PC + dedicated software, to be connected to the Themis acquisition system (in a LAN or via Internet) Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM INTEGRATION – TEAM SUPPORT The SCM team will support all critical activities of the integrations. However, due to the large number of satellites, a strategy must be implemented to limit the number of travels, the cost and the time spent Several solutions can be envisaged but they are not evaluated yet This will be done with the agreement of UCB Bertrand delaPorte

THM-SCM-PDR – THEMIS-SCM SCM OPERATIONS SCM can only be switched ON or OFF If several Modes are specified, this is managed by IDPU The single specific mode of SCM is the Calibration REQUIREMENT: run the Calibration for about 30 secondes once per orbit Bertrand delaPorte
