We then substitute the given value every time we see the variable, like so: Evaluate x + 4 for x = 3 Replace x with 3, then follow the order of operations to simplify. x + 4 = = 7 Evaluate 3x 2 + 4x for x = -2 Replace x with -2, then follow the order of operations to simplify. 3x 2 + 4x = 3(-2) 2 + 4(-2) = 3 * = = 4
