NOUNS -Person, place or thing -Person is usually a proper noun, if not….mailman, cashier -Place: veterinarian’s office, Ireland, classroom -Thing: basketball, desk, truck -ABC Game -Longest List Game

VERBS -A word that expresses action or existence -Action verbs: animate a sentence physically (swim, jump, drop, whistle) or mentally (think, dream, enjoy, suppose, love). -Linking verbs: don’t express action, but help complete statements about the subject by describing or identifying it. (Mary is a doctor. Jane feels feverish.)

ADVERBS -A word that gives more information about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. -The horses ran quickly through the gate. How did the horses run? Quickly -Adverbs of manner: easily, loudly, fast, patiently -Adverbs of place: under, through, around, nowhere, outside -Adverbs of purpose: so, to, so that, because, accidentally, intentionally -Adverbs of frequency: never, often, rarely, always, sometimes -Adverbs of time: tomorrow, next, later, recently, soon, last, finally In groups of two or three, write one sentence for each type of adverb listed. (Five sentences total)

PRONOUN – TAKES THE PLACE OF A NOUN -He, she, they, them, that, him, her, it, someone, something. - Mary climbed the fence. -She climbed the fence.

REPLACE THE NOUN WITH A PRONOUN - Jill is going shopping. - The apple was way too sour. - My grandmother is coming tomorrow. - Henry and Jim are flying to Aruba. - The bicycle is brand new.

ADJECTIVE -A word that describes a noun or pronoun -The tall professor stood in the doorway. -Marge and her six-year old sister went to the party.

PREPOSITION -A word that relates to a noun or pronoun to some other information in a sentence -“Linking word” -Prepositions of time and place: at, on, in The train will be here at three o’clock. My brother is coming on Monday. I go to the gym in the morning. -Prepositions of movement: to, towards, downtown, upstairs, etc. I am moving to the coast. My room is downstairs.

CONJUNCTION -A word that connects ideas in a sentence -and, but, for, because, however, nevertheless, therefore, still, or, however -I can’t make it to the meeting, but I will look up the notes online. -My car broke down last week, therefore I will have to ride my bike to school. -Write five sentences on a sheet of paper that include a conjunction in each.
