What Are Study Skills?

The First Study Skill: Time Management Planning ahead is important Don’t leave everything to the last second It is easier to remember when you study things over a longer period of time

Why Not Cram? The brain has an easier time converting from short term to long term memory if the knowledge is repeated sooner after learning Learning everything at the last second means you are more likely to forget

So How Do I Manage My Time? Create a study schedule so that you will study a little every night Underline and change the color of anything important Follow your schedule

Example SundayMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday 1 Begin studying chapter Study chapter Study chapter Review 5 Quiz Today Review chapter Review chapter Review chapter Study chapter Study Chapter Review 18 Review 19 Test Today

The Second Study Skill: What Kind of Learner am I? There are three types of learners – Auditory – Visual – Tactile By finding out what kind of learner you are you can focus your studying on what is most effective

Lets Find Out Your Learning Style Go to the link provided below and take the Learning Style Inventory provided by PSU.

So What Now?

The Third Study Skill: Note Taking Notes are important because they are a way to get information when your teacher isn’t present So make sure your notes are easy to read

So How Do I take Notes? Listen carefully to your teacher Make sure to copy anything that your teacher writes down. It is probably important. Rewrite your notes when you get home, make them legible

Example

What Do I Do With My Notes? Notes are useless if you don’t use them Review your notes within 24 hours of writing them, most students loose the information quickly if you don’t use it Rewrite your notes if needed. In some cases this helps you learn them better

The Fourth Study Skill: Memorization Tools No matter how well you learn some thing simply must be memorized In order to help memorizing there are several easy tools

Note Cards Flash cards are useful for memorizing vocabulary words

Foldables A foldable provides some of the same benefits that flash cards provide The foldable is easier to store and can allow for quicker studying

Foldables
