LOCALITY INSIGHT an overview of the South West Locality Strategy & Insight

CITY & LOCALITY OVERVIEW City Overview Edinburgh is an affluent city, but with pockets of poverty and low income as severe as any other city in Scotland City population, and demand for services has grown rapidly in the past decade. This population and demand growth is projected to continue throughout the next ten to fifteen years, facilitated by planned housing developments. Locality Overview Locality level averages mask significant variation at lower level geographies across most measures All services the Council provides are needed in every locality Every locality contains at least one ward or community which is significantly different from the rest of the area Population growth in the next decade is likely to be most concentrated towards the north of the city

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Key Facts Sighthill/Gorgie has the highest percentage (5.6%) of those who reported having bad or very bad health Sighthill/Gorgie has a significantly higher number of individuals (17.7%) who reported that their daily activities are limited Sighthill/Gorgie has the highest number of individuals who reported that they do no exercise, 45.6%, 6.2% higher than Colinton/Fairmilehead which had the lowest number at 39.4%

CRIME AND ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Key Facts Huge existing disparities between Sighthill/Gorgie and the rest of the wards which are reflected in satisfaction levels Fountainbridge/Craiglockart has the second highest number of violent crimes but is still only 31.9% of the number in Sighthill/Gorgie Fountainbridge/Craiglockart has the second highest number of incidents of disorder but only amounts to a third of the number in Sighthill/Gorgie Vandalism and incidents of fire raising are significantly higher in Sighthill/Gorgie than the rest of the wards

YOUNG PEOPLE Child Poverty Child poverty in the South West is the second highest out of all four localities with 20% of all children living in low income households Sighthill/Gorgie has highest percentage of child poverty (35%) out of all wards citywide There are 370 ‘looked after children’ in North East, 27% of the total number citywide The number of children living in foster, residential and kinship care in the North East are all higher than the city average The number of looked after children living with their parents/guardians is significantly lower, 18.4%, than the city average of 24.1%

YOUNG PEOPLE Education Portobello/Craigmillar has the highest number of adults with no qualifications at 28% 39% of primary schools are below the locality average but average attendance for all Primary schools is higher than city-wide target The locality accounts for 15% of all primary exclusions city-wide (by time excluded) Secondary schools in the locality contribute 40% of overall exclusions (by time excluded)

VULNERABLE ADULTS Key Facts Sighthill/Gorgie has the highest number of individuals, 2651, who have an open health and social care involvement The ward with the second highest number of individuals with health and social care involvement is Colinton/Fairmilehead which still only has 41.1% (1088) of the number in Sighthill/Gorgie The ward with the lowest number is Pentland Hills - 915

OVERVIEW Key Facts Generally affluent area however it holds some of the highest levels of poverty in the city with very apparent income equalities Inequalities are not only evident in terms of income but on all other outcomes including crime, employment, health and education Low satisfaction levels in Sighthill/Gorgie can be attributed to high levels of poverty and crime
