US History: Week 2 Early British Colonies Warm-up 3: Community If you had the opportunity to create your own school community, what type of features would it have?

US History: Early British Colonies Objectives: 1.Why did British Colonists come to the US? 2.Identify 2 examples of British Colonists struggling in Virginia 3.How did British Colonists deal with the struggles? (Give one example)

Jamestown, Virginia Jamestown- (1607) 1st English city in present day US Virginia Company- in charge of Jamestown *Goal- make money (find gold like Spanish) Disastrous start- settlers died in huge numbers (WHY?) 1)Gentlemen Settlers- they did not know how to live in the wild (kill food, build homes) 2)Looked for gold- not food 3)Disease- town is in a swamp with mosquitoes

Jamestown, Virginia

Tobacco- Native American crop popular in Europe *Tobacco made Jamestown profitable (Drug trade makes $ too just like gold) New settlers- people wanted to move to Jamestown to make money and cheap/free land Headright system- free land for new arrivals If people couldn’t afford payment to come here, how do you think they would pay? Indentured servant- person to poor to pay for trip, had cost of trip paid in return for 3-5 years labor

With the chance to start a new life, there’s one problem….

– *Shortage of people/labor required incentives for people to move to Americas Problems for settlers- as more people came, available land moved farther inland – *Caused clashes with Indians Bacon’s Rebellion- (1676) former indentured servants riot and burn down Jamestown – *Wanted more protection against Indians from local government – **Importance- created a need to find a less troublesome, cheap labor source What would be a perfect replacement for indentured servants? – SLAVES!

New England- settled by English looking for religious freedom (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) Puritans- wanted to purify/fix the Church of England (make it less Catholic), treated harshly by King in England Pilgrims- Puritans who wanted to separate from the Church of England, sailed on Mayflower and landed on Plymouth (1620) *Both wanted to create a model Christian society in Americas based on THEIR BELIEFS (did not want people or religions who were different)

*problems with Indians- Puritains felt Indians were in the way, lots of clashes Rhode Island- only New England colony with religious freedom Roger Williams- founder, kicked out of Massachusettes Indians- felt Indians should be paid if kicked off land Religious Freedom- thought government should not follow church laws
