The Romans came to Britain nearly 2000 years ago today They changed our country They invaded other countries too

They lived in Rome

1 st invasion : In August 55 B.C. The Roman Emperor Julius Caesar invaded After winning several battles 2 nd Invasion : Following summer 54 B.C. he bought 30,000 soldiers and 2,000 horse riders 3 rd Invasion : One hundred years after – 25,000 men

Two reasons : 1) They were cross with Britain for helping the French fight Roman Emperor Julius Caesar 2) They came to Britain looking for riches – land, slaves, iron, silver, gold

The Romans remained in Britain from 43 AD to 410 AD Almost 400 years

They spoke a form of Latin known as vulgar Latin Different from what we learn today

Their home in Italy was being attacked by fierce tribes and every soldier was needed

(straight) Roads – Originally dirt tracks They built over 16,000 km of new roads They knew the shortest distance was form one place to another in a straight line, so they made their roads straight

They introduced the idea of living in big cities and towns Their towns were laid out like a grid and the middle is where the market square was for trading If a name has ‘chester’, ‘caster’ o ‘cester’, its almost certainly Roman eg Manchester
