Discussion 1 Week 4 Alvin Johnson

Learning Opportunities for Teachers Integrate local and global teaching workshops (classroom and virtual) Create opportunities for teachers to interact with their peers and share best practices Support pre-service teacher preparation programs Prepare Read new research in the field Learn and practice new technologies Learn “Investing in high quality teacher preparation will better serve our nation’s children” (Boyd, Grossman, Lankford, Loeb, Wyckoff, 2008, p. 1) “Quality, well-prepared educators are key to student success” (S. D. Bechtel, Jr Foundation, 2014, p. 1). Succeed

Making the Grade – Why Teachers Should Use Certain Practices Globally A teacher holds a such a great responsibility because they “educate generations of learners and in their hands lay the faith of any nation” (Kharbach, 2014, para. 1). It is because of this huge responsibility that it is important for certain practices to be consistent from a global perspective. “A well developed country is a country whose citizens are well educated and this is done only by effective teaching strategies” (Kharbach, 2014, para. 1).

Practices for 21 st Century Teachers Globally Effective teachers need to adhere to practices that are researched-based. The following practices have been developed by teachers and educational administrators and are meant to be a resource for teachers (Northwest Regional ESD, 2013, para. 1): Identifying Similarities and Differences Summarizing and Note Taking Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition Homework and Practice Nonlinguistic Representations Setting Objectives & Providing Feedback Generating & Testing Hypotheses Cues, Questions & Advance Organizers Cooperative Learning Non-fiction Writing

You cannot expect more from others than you do of yourself! Using Common Core Standards As mentioned in the text on p. 156, students can only learn to develop the necessary skill set if teachers are equipped with the tools to guide them. Raising the Bar for Entry – Employing High Quality Teachers There has been a call to have an entry exam into the teaching profession because of " the need for a rigorous, performance-based exam—a bar-like exam, in AFT president Randi Weingarten’s memorable phrasing—that serves as the gateway into the profession. Such an exam would be modeled after other professions with more rigorous entry requirements and would ensure that all new licensed teachers meet a consistent standard of quality” (Mehta, Doctor, & Kappan, 2014, para. 3).

Preparing Teachers to Master the NETS-T Standards  The ISTE Standards (formally the NETS-T) for Teachers were designed to “evaluate skills and knowledge educators need to teach, work and learn in an increasingly connected global and digital society” (ISTE, 2014, para. 1).  It will be a continual effort that has to be placed in order to adequately prepare teachers to master these standards in their classrooms. “Moving forward, teachers must become comfortable being co- learners with their students and colleagues around the world” (ISTE.org 2014, para. 2).  This means continually affording teachers the opportunity to hone their skills and educators being willing to put forth the effort to take advantage of those opportunities.  The ISTE Standards (formally the NETS-T) for Teachers were designed to “evaluate skills and knowledge educators need to teach, work and learn in an increasingly connected global and digital society” (ISTE, 2014, para.
